The exhibition project stems from the theme of the exhibition “Shanties. The informal city” and, consequently, it is closely related to the configuration and the urban growth of the shantytowns and the city itself.
For this reason, the exhibition, just like the shantytowns, is articulated around the need to build, to erect walls, to create dwellings, and all this in a disorderly, almost spontaneous way.
These dwellings, built to house the content of the exhibition, are permanently open and tied to the exterior space, adapting to the needs of the programme and of the exhibition hall’s space.
The construction system which has been used is based on the idea of self-building. This involves some coupled wooden modules which convey the simplicity and utilisation of the material resources which were available to the shanty-dwellers.
The disorderly arrangement of the dwellings and the interaction among them gives rise, in a counterposed way, to the public space or street.
The street, the space which is open, dynamic and suited for communication, becomes the vertebrating axis of the history of the shantytowns.
