A NEW URBAN LANDSCAPE
The big housing estates in Barcelona
Subsequent to the Social Urgency Plan of 1958, approved by the State, the bases
were laid for the construction of the major housing estates where part of the
shanty-dwellers would be relocated. Most of these housing estates, which were
erected by official and public bodies, reaccommodated shanty-dwellers between
1949 and 1990. They were located in distant suburbs, inside and outside the
municipality of Barcelona, without taking into consideration their inhabitants’
occupational needs or rooting in the city. These were neighbourhoods without
facilities and completely lacking in urban development, which led to talk of
“vertical shantyism”..
