THE FIGHT TO BECOME PART OF THE CITY

The “development” years
Reaccommodation in housing estates: new perspectives and new fears

The 1960s marked a change in the social reality of the shantytowns. As the postwar was left behind and employment possibilities increased, the shantytowns took on a different look. In the “development” years, Barcelona incorporated the shantytowns into the aspirations of improvement which were growing with respect to urban issues.

The mass reaccommodations in social housing estates opened a new perspective as well as a new fear for the illegal status of the shanty-dwellers and the difficulty of obtaining new homes, especially in the cases in which more than one family nucleus lived in one same shanty.
