CAN TUNIS. A FAILED EXPERIENCE

The wish to remain in the neighborhood broken by a formal reaccommodation

The installation and continued existence of the shanties of Can Tunis was always linked to the growth of the port. The inhabitants created a housing cooperative to finance the project of a reaccommodation near the shantytown. This responded to the occupational needs of many inhabitants and to the wish to remain in the neighbourhood. However, this project was not taken into consideration by the City Council, which reaccommodated the inhabitants of Can Tunis in the Cinco Rosas neighbourhood of the town of Sant Boi in 1968.

Later, the City Council used the empty shanties of Can Tunis to relocate people, mainly gypsies. The City Council went about reaccommodating the remaining families in La Mina housing estate and, in 1979, in a little newly-constructed neighbourhood: New Can Tunis, adjacent to the cemetery. It was considerably neglected, registering a high level of marginalisation until it was demolished in the year 2003.
